What Is CNA Exam Preparation?

CNA exam preparation is focused instruction and practice designed to help students understand the knowledge, skills, and testing expectations associated with Florida’s Certified Nursing Assistant examination.

At AZ SkillCare, preparation may include:

  • Review of essential nursing assistant knowledge and terminology
  • Guided practice for commonly tested clinical skills
  • Infection-control, safety, and resident-rights review
  • Instructor-led demonstrations and step-by-step coaching
  • Written practice questions and knowledge assessments
  • Timed clinical skills practice and mock examinations
  • Individual feedback to identify areas needing improvement

CNA exam preparation helps students strengthen their existing knowledge, improve their hands-on performance, and become more familiar with the examination process.

Who Is CNA Exam Preparation For?

AZ SkillCare’s CNA exam preparation programs are designed for adults who want structured review, hands-on practice, and additional support before taking or retaking Florida’s Certified Nursing Assistant examination.

This program may be appropriate for adults age 18 or older who are:
  • Preparing to challenge the Florida CNA examination
  • Graduates of a nursing assistant training program who want additional review and practice
  • Candidates preparing to retake the written or clinical skills portion of the examination
  • Healthcare workers returning to direct-care responsibilities after time away
  • Individuals with previous healthcare education, training, certification, or employment
  • Internationally educated healthcare professionals who need Florida-focused review
  • Students who benefit from instructor guidance, repetition, mock testing, or language-supportive instruction
Some skills-review or advanced preparation programs may require proof of previous healthcare education, training, certification, or employment.

How AZ SkillCare Prepares You

AZ SkillCare uses a structured preparation process to help students strengthen their knowledge, improve their clinical skills, and become more familiar with the CNA examination process.

A Step-by-Step Readiness Process

1. Readiness Review

We begin by learning about your previous education, healthcare experience, examination history, and areas of concern. This helps determine which preparation format may best meet your needs.

2. Written Knowledge Review

Students review important nursing assistant concepts that may appear on the written examination, including:

  • Resident care and safety
  • Infection prevention
  • Communication
  • Residents’ rights
  • Personal care
  • Nutrition and hydration
  • Mobility and positioning
  • Vital signs and measurements
  • Changes in resident condition
  • Professional conduct

3. Instructor-Led Skills Demonstrations

The instructor demonstrates the sequence, safety measures, communication, and critical checkpoints associated with nursing assistant skills.

Students learn more than what action to perform. They also learn how to organize the skill, protect the resident, communicate throughout care, and avoid common examination errors.

4. Hands-On Skills Practice

Students practice in AZ SkillCare’s dedicated training area using simulation equipment and resident-care supplies.

Practice focuses on repetition, safe technique, organization, infection control, resident comfort, communication, and completion of the required steps.

5. Mock Written and Clinical Exams

Students may complete:

  • Written practice questions
  • Timed knowledge assessments
  • Randomly assigned clinical skill combinations
  • Full clinical skills simulations
  • Skills checklist evaluations
  • Readiness reviews before examination day

The number and type of mock examinations included may vary by program.

6. Feedback and Improvement Planning

Students receive clear feedback about:

  • Steps performed correctly
  • Steps that were missed
  • Safety or infection-control concerns
  • Communication and indirect-care behaviors
  • Timing and organization
  • Skills requiring additional repetition

The purpose is not simply to repeat a skill. The purpose is to understand what needs to improve before the official examination.

What Is the Florida Prometric CNA Exam?

The Florida Department of Health contracts with Prometric to develop and administer Florida’s Certified Nursing Assistant examination. Prometric processes examination applications, schedules approved candidates, administers the examination, and provides official examination results. The Florida Board of Nursing reviews the required information and determines whether a candidate is eligible to test.

The examination includes a written knowledge portion and a clinical skills portion.

Written Knowledge Examination

The written examination:
  • Includes 60 multiple-choice questions
  • Allows 90 minutes for completion
  • Is completed using a computer
  • Evaluates nursing assistant knowledge and resident-care concepts
An audio or Spanish option may be requested for the written examination. The candidate must request the appropriate option when submitting the official examination application.

Clinical Skills Examination

Prometric identifies 22 possible skills that may be included in the clinical examination. Each candidate is scored on five skills:
  • Handwashing
  • Indirect Care
  • Three additional skills assigned by computer
The clinical examination is timed. The amount of time provided depends on the combination of skills assigned and currently ranges from approximately 31 to 40 minutes. Candidates must demonstrate competency in all five scored skills to pass the clinical portion.

What Is Indirect Care?

Indirect Care is evaluated throughout the clinical skills examination. It includes the behaviors used to protect the resident’s rights, safety, comfort, dignity, and well-being while care is being provided. Indirect Care may include:
  • Greeting the resident and introducing yourself
  • Explaining the care being provided
  • Communicating respectfully
  • Protecting the resident’s privacy
  • Following infection-control practices
  • Considering the resident’s preferences
  • Maintaining safety and comfort
  • Responding to the resident’s needs
Indirect Care is not performed as a separate assigned procedure. The evaluators observe these behaviors while the candidate performs the assigned clinical skills.

Before Applying for the Examination

Candidates are responsible for completing the official Prometric application, paying the required examination fees, completing the required background-screening process, and following all eligibility and scheduling instructions.

Practice in the AZ SkillCare Skills Area

A Dedicated Place to Practice, Repeat, and Improve

Reading about a nursing assistant skill is not the same as physically performing it. AZ SkillCare provides a dedicated hands-on practice area where students can work through resident-care activities using training equipment and supplies in a controlled learning environment.

Practice Equipment May Include:

  • Training beds
  • Wheelchairs
  • Mannequins
  • Transfer and gait belts
  • Linens and hospital gowns
  • Basins and personal-care supplies
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Measurement and vital-sign equipment
  • Mock resident-care supplies
  • Positioning and mobility equipment

What Students Practice

Students work on:
  • Preparing and organizing supplies
  • Handwashing and infection control
  • Communicating with the resident
  • Maintaining privacy and dignity
  • Performing the assigned skill in sequence
  • Using equipment safely
  • Recognizing critical safety steps
  • Completing care within the available time
  • Leaving the resident and practice area safe

Practice Without the Pressure of the Official Exam

The AZ SkillCare practice area gives students an opportunity to pause, ask questions, repeat steps, receive corrections, and practice again before entering a formal examination environment.
